18 th December, Kuala Lumpur
-. Minister of Tourism, Datuk Seri
Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, today announced
that the Visit Malaysia Year
(VMY) 2007 campaign will be officially
launched by the Prime Minister on
Saturday January 6 th 2007 evening at
a colourful gala in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.
The highlights of the event will include
a concert featuring renowned Malaysian
artistes, an exciting fireworks display
and the unveiling of the 60 metres high
Ferris Wheel similar to the "London
Eye"; dubbed the "Eye on Malaysia"
- a first
such structure in South East Asia.
According to the Minister, "This
VMY’07 campaign is the third in the series
and I am confident it will surpass the
successes of the previous campaigns held
in 1990 and 1994. This is due to the meticulous
planning and innovative tourism
products lined up for the 20.1 million
visitors expected to descend upon our
shores. We see this also as a timely initiative
as it will help to enhance and
internationalise Malaysia’s brand image
as a global tourist destination of choice.
Its significance is further augmented
by the nation’s Golden Jubilee celebrations
as we rejoice in our 50 years of nationhood".
Prior to the official launch, the various
border states will organise their own
welcome ceremony for tourists entering
the country on January 1 st 2007, to
herald the beginning of VMY ’07. Kelantan
Tourism Action Council has arranged
to welcome a delegation from Southern
Thailand that will be led by the Governor
of Narathiwat province. Perlis will organise
a reception for all tourist arrivals at
the two entry points from 8 am to 11 am
on January 1 st 2007. Johor will decorate
entry points at the Causeway and the Second
Link with banners and billboards to
welcome the tourists.
In line with the 50 th Anniversary of
Independence, the VMY 07 Secretariat
is coordinating over 200 events across
the country with 50 major events to
showcase Malaysia’s wealth of tourism
attractions. The first of these 50 major
