24th June, Sepang -
Sepang International Circuit (SIC), promoter and organizer of the Super
GT International Series Malaysia, will initiate plans to have a
Malaysian team to compete in Malaysian round of the series next year.
Announcing this today, SIC Chairman Datuk Mokhzani Tun Dr Mahathir said
the circuit would be talking immediately to interested corporations and
parties to have the racing team.
"The Super GT Series has been in Malaysia since 2000 and there have been
Malaysians competing in the series. I believe it's only rational that we
have a Malaysian team to take advantage of the event here.
"I sincerely believe that the Super GT Series in Malaysia will be an
ideal platform to take Malaysian motorsports to a higher level and that
the participation of a Malaysian team will be good the event as well as
for the sports in general," he said at a joint press conference with GTA
Chairman Masaaki Bandoh.
"I believe we have a lot of talent in Malaysia and we are confident that
there would be interested parties and individuals to support the idea,"
Mokhzani added.
Held in conjunction of the 7th edition of Super GT in Malaysia, Mokhzani
also said that the racing team would not need to participate in the
Super GT but also other international endurance races including Sepang's
12-hour Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race.
In his speech, Bandoh said the Japan GTA welcomed plans to have a
Malaysian team competing in the Super GT International Series Malaysia
and that the association was ready to lend its support to the plan.
Saying that the participation of a Malaysian would be good for the
event, Bandoh also congratulate Datuk Mokhzani and SIC for their
diligent efforts in building the event over the years.
The ceremony was also marked with Bandoh presenting a racing helmet to
Mokhzani, who is an active racer and a regular in the MME race.
